Introduction

Welcome to DottzGaming.com’s Magicka Templar PvE DPS Build, Radiant Justice, for the Elder Scrolls Online! This build is meant for PvE dungeons, trials and solo play. This Magicka Templar build has recommendations for end game gear as well as alternatives that are easier to acquire.  The rotations are not overly difficult but may need some practice time in front of a target dummy. This build works well in groups and also shines in solo play because of the amount of self-healing available for Magicka Templars, as well as minor sorcery group buffs and faster resurrection times for fallen group members.

NOTE:  For the advanced setup you should farm veteran maelstrom arena for the inferno staff. If you happen to get a maelstrom shock staff, use it temporarily until you get an inferno staff. We put the maelstrom staff on the back bar and use it to drop elemental blockade, and then all your light attacks will hit much harder on enemies standing in your blockade. When using the maelstrom staff, you’ll notice that you only have 5pc Mother’s Sorrow on your front bar. This is perfectly fine. You spend more time on your front bar then on your back bar, so you will have decent use of the spell crit bonus. Ideally you will have two maelstrom inferno staves to swap between depending on the fight. A staff with a prismatic enchant will do more damage to undead and daedra and can be used with great success in some trial fights.

For the monster helm we use 2 separate pieces with spell crit bonus, so you can use any combination of Zaans, Slimecraw and Iceheart. As we are using the Shadow mundus stone, maximizing our spell crit improves our performance more than using a complete monster helm set. The only exception to this is if you can stand in melee range, then use a complete set of Zaan (for single target fight) or Grothdarr for AoE damage. If you prefer to have a little more health and have the flexibility to fight at range (accepting the loss of some spell crit) go with the Valkyn Skoria set.

If you do not have transmute crystals for your jewelry, it’s fine to run 3x arcane jewelry as well. It’s not as strong but will work fine.

If you do not have the Perfect False God’s Devotion set, the regular version is okay until you can farm the better version.

It should be noted here for reference since it is also a popular setup that you can achieve very good single target damage using Zaan, Perfected Mantle of Siroria (body) and Spell Strategist (jewelry and weapon) but it will not work as well in mobile fights or where the are multiple targets. If you do run this setup, change your mundus stone to The Thief.

Magicka Templar DPS PvE Build – Advanced Group Support

If you want to provide higher group support damage at a small loss of your own damage, you can replace Burning Spellweave with Master Architect. If you do this, you must swap the Crescent Sweep ultimate to your front bar and swap Blazing Spear to your backbar (to keep the benefit of the Piercing Spear passive). Each time you cast Crescent Sweep (in melee range) you’ll be giving yourself and a few team mates the Major Slayer buff (15% damage boost to dungeon and trial enemies).

NOTE:  In the intermediate setup we are using Mother’s Sorrow on body to ensure we have its buff always. We pair this set with Burning Spellweave from City of Ash. The drop rate of the inferno staves is fairly low so expect to spend some time in this relatively easy dungeon and you might have to transmute the staves to the correct trait. If it happens to drop in precise, it’s almost as good as infused if not just as good (but mostly if you are already very skilled).

NOTE:  Slimecraw is a relatively easy to acquire monster helm set for players who are new to veteran content. The helm set provides minor berserk (8% damage boost) and a boost to your spell crit. Julianos is a crafted set that provides a solid boost to your spell damage, magicka, and spell crit. It’s an all-round good set. Mother’s Sorrow is an overland set that drops in Deshaan. This set boosts your spell crit to high numbers. Critical hits are important part of dealing a lot of damage.

Skill Explanation

  1. Reflective Light– Damages up to 3 targets and applies a DoT effect on them.
  2. Solar Barrage –This skill creates a short range AoE burst around you but its true power is in that it empowers all your light attacks. Practice your light attack weave and watch your damage go up by leaps and bounds.
  3. Elemental Weapon – We use this skill to greatly empower our next light attack. It also applies a random status effect on our target (burning, concussed, or chilled).
  4. Radiant Oppression– This is our execute.
  5. Degeneration– We use this skill because it not only grants us major sorcery, but it applies a powerful DoT to our enemies, as well as give us magicka return on light attacks.
  6. Shooting Star–  Our primary ultimate. Having this slotted also passively increases your max magicka and recovery.
  7. Unstable Wall of Elements– Your bread and butter wide area AoE DoT. The fire blockade does more damage to an already Burning target.
  8. Blazing Spear– Our other bread and butter AoE DoT. It’s range is smaller than Elemental Blockade. Also having it slotted increases our critical damage done for all skills on the front bar.
  9. Channeled Focus– This skill provides us extra resistances as well as magicka return over time. Keep this up as much as possible.
  10. Dampen Magic– This is our shield. Use it as needed in situations where you might get hit hard and can’t always block. Note that shields are not as strong in Murkmire as in prior versions so use at your discretion. It might be better to simply try to avoid being hit by moving or dodging.
  11. Channeled Acceleration – This skill provides us with 36 seconds of minor force, i.e. a small boost to our critical hit damage.
  12. Crescent Sweep– We don’t typically use this ultimate but having it slotted increases our critical damage done for all skills on that bar.

Alternative Skills:

  1. If you do not have the Psijic Order skills, you can use Force Pulse or Crushing Shock for your spammable attack. Crushing Shock has slightly lower damage but very high group utility in dungeons and trials in that you can interrupt enemies from a distance. This is equivalent to doing a bash from melee range.
  2. Same as in #1, an alternative to channeled acceleration is to use Barbed Trap from the Fighter’s guild. You have to stand at close range however. If you prefer not to do that, slot Inner Light on your back bar instead for a max magicka boost.

Race

In the most recent update, the Wrathstone DLC (U21) races were rebalanced across the board. The differences in performance between them are very minor. Here’s a brief rundown of appropriate races for a magicka templar DPS:

  1. High Elf (Altmer): This is the archetypical damage dealer. If you want to squeeze the most of this build, go with this, but sustaining a fast paced rotation will need some practice. If you want to also play PvP, this race offers some benefits to stamina sustain as well.
  2. Dark Elf (Dunmer): This race is also a very strong damage dealer, but also comes with the huge benefit of being able to switch between a magicka templar and a stamina templar without changing racesince Dunmer is a very strong choice for Stamina DPS race. The Dunmer is an excellent choice as a PvP race due to its stamina bonuses and flame resistance.
  3. Breton (recommended): This race can produce great results as well but lacking a bit of spell damage the elven races offer. However, it does offer resistance buffs and a pretty significant boost to magicka sustain making it that much easier to sustain fast paced rotations without running out of resources.

Rotation & Resource Management

Boss Fight

Begin on Back Bar

Channeled Focus (every other rotation) -> Channeled Acceleration (every 4th rotation) -> Swap

Ultimate (if available) -> Light Attack -> Blazing Spear -> Swap

Unstable Wall of Elements -> Light Attack -> Reflective Light -> Light Attack -> Swap

Degeneration -> Light Attack -> Solar Barrage -> Light Attack -> (Elemental Weapon -> Light Attack (do this sequence 3x)) -> Ultimate (if available) -> Blazing Spear -> Swap

Unstable Wall of Elements -> Light Attack -> Reflective Light -> Light Attack -> Swap

Start over at Degeneration.

Keep Channeled Focus and Channeled Acceleration up always.

When target reaches 25% health, replace the elemental weapon sequence with radiant oppression. When target reaches 10% health, only use radiant oppression.

If you have difficulties sustaining 3x elemental weapon, reduce it to 2x. Blazing Spear is one of your highest damage skills, and if you see that its expiring while you’re in the middle of your elemental weapon sequence, reapply it for best damage output and then skip it at the end of the sequence. You’ll want to spend time in front of a target dummy practicing this. Configure S’rendarr addon (if on PC) to show various timers on your screen so you can monitor your DoT timers. Allowing DoTs to expire is usually one of the reasons some struggle to maximize their DPS output. The rotation sequence described above isn’t a magical recipe for success. You often need to tailor it to your specific needs and the speed at which you weave a rotation. Use it as a template for developing your own rotation.

Tips & Misc.

You want to be a vampire for this build.

When a situation gets rough, be sure to cast Dampen Magic to be able to survive. A dead dps does no dps.

As a templar, you resurrect people quickly and bring them back with full health instead of half health. When someone in your group goes down, be sure to be the one to go and pick them up.

If you play solo or in a group with ineffective heals, slot Ritual of Retribution. It can cleanse harmful effects and is a heal over time for you and your friends as well as a DoT for your enemies. If you prefer big heals without cleansing harmful effects and damage to enemies, slot Breath of Life instead.
