Welcome to’s Warden Tank PvE Build, the Wall, for the Elder Scrolls Online! This build is intended for all levels of PvE: trials, dungeons, and general PvE.  The warden tank is often scoffed at when compared to its dragon knight counterpart. Little do many people know, the warden is a fantastic tank and does just about everything the dragon knight does. The only things we do not bring that the dragon knight does is Engulfing Flames which boosts the group’s fire damage by 10%. To mitigate the loss of this useful effect, have a Magicka DK DPS in your group as they provide this ability. The DK also provides minor brutality to the group via their use of the Earthen Heart passive Mountain’s Blessing and that can also be provided by the addition of a Magicka DK DPS. The Warden tank can provide another very valuable buff, namely Minor Toughness by simply providing a little bit of healing.

NOTE: The most important piece of advice playing a tank is to learn your class and understand the situations you are going to be in while tanking. Following a build is not a recipe for being a good tank, it’s just one of a large number of possible paths to follow. The best build for you is the one that works for you.

NOTE: If you’re in the process of farming Alkosh or want an alternative playstyle, Torug’s Pact is a good substitute.

Gear Choices:

  • If you are not comfortable running a destruction staff on your back bar, use double sword and shield until you are ready to take the next step.
  • Ebon Armory is a really good tank set. Lots of health for you and a bit extra for your group. In a 12-player trial, this is even more valuable. If that extra health saves only 1 DPS from dying, that is quite a bit of damage saved for the team (one dead and one rezzing doing no damage).
  • Roar of Alkosh is probably the best group support set there is. Each time you activate a synergy you debuff enemies in front of you significantly. If your group is stacked with synergy sources you can keep this debuff up almost always (shards, conduits, orbs, etc.). A caveat is, if you are running in a 4-man group with little or no synergies available, the effectiveness of Alkosh goes down.
  • We use a destruction staff on the back bar due to the ability of elemental blockade to continually proc our weapon enchantment, i.e. crusher. You can do close to 100% just using sword/shield but it’s much easier with blockade. As soon as the enchantment is on cooldown the next tick of the blockade will proc it again. In addition, a shock staff can proc off-balance on your target or if using a frost staff it can proc chilled.
  • As you see in this gear setup we use 5 pieces of heavy armor, 1 piece of medium. and 1 piece of light armor to make the most out of the undaunted mettle passive. You can run 6/1/0 or even 7/0/0 if you like. Choose a setup that feels right for you.
  • For jewelry traits we use 1 harmony for improved resource gain when using synergies. If you are a race other than Argonian, you may want to consider using 2 pieces with harmony for improved sustain. We also use 1 infused piece with potion cooldown, and one triune with reduced spell cost. If you are an Argonian you can use stamina trash potions for most content but other races you probably want tri-stat potions and they can become expensive. It is also perfectly fine to leave the jewelry traits as their defaults on the gear.

Alternative Gear Choices

Set Acquisition Notes
Blood Spawn Vet Spindlecluth 2 This set lets you generate ultimate faster as well as receive a resist boost when it procs. It’s a bit more selfish than Lord Warden and not ideal in a 12-man trial but does well in 4-man dungeons.
Akaviri Dragonguard Eastmarch This set lowers the cost of your ultimates and provides more magicka recovery. Ideally use this only if you need more magicka sustain and the group can afford to lose Ebon Armory buff.
Torug’s Pact Crafted This set enhances the value of your weapon enchantment (i.e. crusher) providing even more resist debuffs as well as reduces the cooldown which lets you maintain a higher crusher uptime easier. Use only if there is a second tank using Ebon Armory in the group.
Plague Doctor Deshaan This set boosts your health by a large amount. Use if you need more health situationally such as off-tanking vSO or tanking vHoF.
Powerful Assault Tel Var Use as off-tank in trials to buff your group whenever you use an Assault skill such as Vigor.

Magicka – 0
Health – 50
Stamina – 14

Vampire vs. Werewolf vs. Mortal

Yes, be a vampire. You receive increased magicka recovery and being undead you take less damage if you are low health. Maintain stage 3 vampire for best benefit.

Skill Skill Tree Notes
Heroic Slash One Handed & Shield This skill applies the minor maim debuff on the target and grants you minor heroism which increases your ultimate generation. Keep this up as your stamina pool can sustain it.
Pierce Armor One Handed & Shield This is our primary taunt for enemies in front of us. It also debuffs with major fracture and breach.
Budding Seeds Green Balance This is our primary heal which also heals allies and triggers minor toughness buff through the maturation passive. This is a delayed heal so use it proactively, which you can due to its low cost. If you find that you need emergency heals instead, slot Enchanted Forest but keep in mind it’s much more expensive.
Deep Thoughts Psijic Order Slot this skill if you need a way to recover resources fast. Keep in mind to only use it if you are not in danger of getting one-shot to death so learn first which situations are safe. You will not be blocking while channeling but you will have major protection via skill line passives.
Bull Netch Animal Companions The bull netch provides you with stamina over time. Keep this companion active at all times.
Northern Storm Winter’s Embrace This ultimate is primarily slotted for its passive resist bonuses. Don’t use it really unless you have to while fighting very dangerous trash packs as it grants major protection to nearby allies.
Elemental Blockade Destruction Staff This applies an 8-second ground AoE in front of you. This AoE will hit one target with your crusher enchantment and continue to re-proc it for as long as you maintain your blockade.
Inner Rage Undaunted This is your ranged taunt.
Ice Fortress [FLEX] Winter’s Embrace This skill provides you and your nearby group members with a large resistance boost over a wide area. Very useful as it helps keep the group alive. The alternative morph Expansive Frost Cloak is better if you want a wider range to cover allies further away.
Frozen Device [FLEX] Winter’s Embrace This skill lets you pull enemies to you and apply major maim to them.
Deceptive Predator Animal Companions This skill when activated provides a short burst of speed, but its most important benefit is it triggers the Flourish passive on the back bar.
Aggressive War Horn Alliance War Assault Provides your group with 9.5 seconds of major force and 30 seconds of increased max resources. Without doubt the best ultimate for a tank.
Resolving Vigor Assault A stamina based heal over time. Can be useful in fights where you are magicka starved.
Gripping Shards Winter’s Embrace An AoE root similar to DK talons.
Shielded Assault One Handed & Shield Use when you need a fast gap closer such as Assembly General or Refabrication Committee in vHoF.
Efficient Purge Alliance War Support Cleanse yourself and your group to remove some negative effects. A must-have for Halls of Fabrication and Asylum Sanctorium.
Shimmering Shield Winter’s Embrace Absorbs ranged projectiles, return magicka to you and grants you major heroism.
Crushing Shock Destruction Staff Longer range interrupt ability.
Energy Orb Undaunted Provides healing and synergies for your group.
Balance Mage’s Guild This skill gives you magicka back at the expense of your health plus it provides major ward and resolve. This skill can completely replace Hardened Armor. Be careful with this skill because for a few seconds after using it, your own healing and damage shield efficiency is reduced but if you have an excellent healer you will be just fine.
Bone Surge Undaunted This is a stamina based shield that is extremely useful for other players in your group. If someone casts this, others can synergize on it and receive really strong damage shields and the major vitality buff. Champion Points
Absorb Magic One Handed and Shield Use this skill if you know you’re going to be hit with a lot of high damage spell projectile’s such as Rakkhat’s dark barrage.
Overflowing Altar Undaunted If you need extra healing for you and your group and you have a moment where it’s safe to put this down, use it. A great example is vAS right after Ohlms does his steam attack or in vCR.

Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce (Maximum Health, Magicka and Stamina)

Atronach – Magicka Recovery

If you use Balance for magicka sustain, you can consider using The Lord mundus.

  1. Argonian
  2. Imperial

If you are an Argonian, you can use pick-up stamina potions for most content, but for harder content craft tri-stat potions (bugloss, columbine, mountain flower).

Class (all), Heavy Armor (all), Medium Armor (all except the ones that require 5 pieces of gear), 1 hand and Shield (all), Destruction Staff (all), Fighters Guild (Banish the Wicked), Undaunted (all), Racial (all), Alchemy (Medicinal Use), Vampire (all)

Resource Management & Rotation

Keep your bull netch active at all times for stamina resources. Budding Seeds proactively regularly even if you’re not sure you will need it. Heavy attack when safe to do so for stamina return on your sword/shield bar. Avoid swapping to your back bar if you are about to be hit with a heavy attack. When you do bar swap, only spend a minimal time on your dual wield bar and swap back to your front bar. Light attack as needed to keep crusher enchantment up on the target. Learn to avoid over-taunting and over-using stamina based skills so you don’t run out of resources.
