Introduction

Welcome to DottzGaming.com’s beginner guide for the Druid class in World of Warcraft! This guide will give you a brief overview to what the class has to offer, its specializations and new player focused talent setups to get you going on your adventures through Azeroth! If you are brand new to WoW and are reading this guide, I also recommend checking out my WoW Complete Beginner Guide, which will teach you all non-class specific things you need to know to get yourself started in WoW.

Druids in World of Warcraft are guardians of nature, utilizing natural and celestial energies in the heat of combat. Druids have the ability to shapeshift into various beasts to enhance their abilities in combat, giving them unmatched versatility on the battlefield. They can use these different forms as combat situations call for them, giving the druid the tools to respond to almost any situation!

The Druid class is the ultimate hybrid, with a different spec for every role. Druid’s have 1 ranged DPS spec, 1 melee DPS spec, 1 tank spec and 1 healing spec. Balance druids call on the power of the Moonkin, utilizing the powers of Arcane and Nature magic to deal damage to enemies at range! Feral druids are the melee dps spec, embracing the form of the cat to deal its damage with bites and bleeds. Guardian Druids take on the form of the bear to tank, using their incredible survivability to absorb damage and protect allies! Finally, Restoration druids are the healers of the class, utilizing nature healing-over-time spells to heal allies and help them stay alive!

The Druid’s primary resource depends on the specialization. Several of the druid’s base skills like their heals and utility skills cost mana. However, many of their offensive abilities cost a different resource based on the shapeshift form. Druids use Astral Power while in Moonkin form, rage in Bear form, and energy/combo points in cat form. Combo points, Astral Power and Rage are all resources built up with certain skills, and then spent on more powerful offensive or defensive abilities! Druids wear leather armor, they utilize Intellect as their primary stat for restoration and balance, while using Agility for Feral and Guardian, and they can wield Staves, Daggers, One-Handed and Two-Handed Maces, Fist Weapons, Polearms and non-shield off-hand items.

Races that can play the Monk class are as follows:

  • Highmountain Tauren (Horde)
  • Kul Tiran (Alliance)
  • Night Elf (Alliance)
  • Tauren (Horde)
  • Troll (Horde)
  • Worgen (Alliance)
  • Zandalari Troll (Horde)

Now that we have a brief summary of the class out of the way, let’s get into the specs and what they have to offer. The following builds are going to be tailored to new players, looking to make your rotation as easy and straightforward while adding as few additional skills to your action bars as possible. If you’re looking for something more advanced and focused on dealing as much damage/healing as possible, I recommend checking out Icy-Veins or WoWhead for builds more tailored towards end game raids, mythic+ and rated PvP.

Talents

  1. Nature’s Balance – This talent makes it so that while you’re in combat, you generate 1 astral power every 2 seconds. In addition, while out of combat, your astral power stays at 50 instead of going to 0, giving you astral power to spend the second you get into combat!
  2. Wild Charge – This talent gives us a versatile mobility tool, letting us leap forwards, backwards, to allies, or enemies based on our shapeshift form.
  3. Guardian Affinity – This talent has our Balance Druid embrace the Guardian druid specialization as well, making us much tankier. Guardian Affinity gives us a passive talent that gives us 6% damage reduction, Thrash (which is a bleed we can use in bear form), Incapacitating Roar (which is an AoE CC we can use in bear form), and Frenzied Regeneration (an incredibly strong self heal that we can use while in bear form).
  4. Mass Entanglement – This talent gives us a strong AoE root tool, allowing us to root all enemies within 15 yards of our target for 30 seconds. Keep in mind though that damage may break this effect.
  5. Starlord – This passive talent gives us 4% haste for 15 seconds, stacking up to 3 times, whenever we use Starsurge or Starfall (which are our astral power spenders). Gaining stacks does not refresh the duration of the buff, though.
  6. Stellar Drift – This talent increases our Starfall’s (our AoE astral power spender) duration by 2 seconds, damage by 15% and allows us to cast while moving while this skill is active!
  7. Solstice – This talent makes it so that during the first 6 seconds of every Eclipse, Shooting Stars will fall 300% more often. Eclipse is a passive that will be explained during the rotation section!
  8. Thorns – This PvP talent gives you an active ability that makes it so that melee opponents who attack you will have nature damage reflected back at them for 12 seconds. Attackers will also have their movement speed reduced by 50% for 4 seconds.
  9. Moonkin Aura – This passive talent makes it so that Starsurge grants 4% spell critical chance for up to 8 allies within 40 yards for 18 seconds, stacking up to 3 times.
  10. Celestial Guardian – Thisincredibly strong passive talents makes you take 10% less damage from spells and receive 20% increased healing while in Bear form, combining really well with our Guardian Affinity!

Rotation

Dealing Damage

When dealing damage as a balance druid (aka a boomkin), you need to make sure to properly manage your eclipse passive. This passive puts you into a lunar eclipse when you use 2 wraths (which empowers starfire for the duration), and a solar eclipse when you use 2 starfires (which empowers wrath for the duration), and these eclipses happen in alternation.

You want to start off a fight with 2 Wraths to make sure you get into Lunar eclipse first, to increase the critical chance and reduce the cast time of starfire. After you cast your two wraths, follow it up it up with the application of your two DoTs: Moonfire and Sunfire. Afterwards, you’ll use Starfire to get up to 90 Astral power, and then dump all of your Astral Power into Starsurge for a big burst of damage! You’ll then use Starfire as your filler until your Luanr Eclipse ends and you enter Solar Eclipse. Then, use Wrath as your filler until the Solar Eclipse ends and you enter Lunar Eclipse, then go back to Starfire as your filler and keep alternating your eclipses like this!

Besides your eclipse management, you’ll be working to maintain your Moonfire and Sunfire DoTs on your targets, using Starfire on Owlkin Frenzy procs, all while spending your Astral Power on Starsurge in single target situations and Starfall in AoE!

Offense

  • When you want to deal a big burst of damage, use Celestial Alignment, which gives you both eclipse effects and 10% haste for 20 seconds!
  • Use Mass Entanglement or Entangling Roots to root problematic enemies in their place! You can also combine this with solar beam to silence enemies trapped in your roots!
  • Typhoon can be used to push back and slow enemies! Really helpful to move dungeon and raid enemies into more favorable positions for your group.

Defense

  • If you are going to take a big hit or are taking a little too much damage, use Barkskin – this low cooldown ability reduces damage taken by 20% for 12 seconds!
  • Utilize Bear form if youre taking a lot of damage and need to make yourself tankier. You can utilize mangle to generate rage to cast on Ironfur to give you extra armor, and use Frenzied Regeneration to give yourself a massive heal! Keep in mind you don’t deal much damage in this form.
  • Use Soothe to remove an enrage effect from an enemy!
  • Cyclone is a really powerful CC that can remove a problematic enemy from a fight for 6 seconds! During this time, they cant deal or receive any damage or healing!
  • Hibernate can be used to put beast or dragonkin type enemies to sleep for a long period of time! Keep in mind that this CC will break on damage.
  • You have access to stealth while you are in cat form. This can be useful to bypass enemies you don’t want to engage with!
  • Dash is really good to move around the battlefield quickly. Keep in mind this puts you into cat form where you are not as tanky or deal as much damage.
  • Stampeding Roar is a powerful tool to give your party a big movement speed boost, having them move 60% faster for 8 seconds!
  • Wild Charge can be used in a variety of ways based on what the situation calls for! Use it in caster form to leap back to an ally, cat form to get behind an enemy, bear form to charge to and root an enemy, moonkin form to leap backwards to travel form to leap forwards!
  • Use Remove Corruption to remove Curses and Poisons from your allies!
  • Use Innervate on a friendly healer to allow them to be able to cast their skills with no mana cost for a period of time!

Feral

Talents

  1. Sabertooth – This talent makes it so that our Ferocious Bite (our main direct-damage combo point spender) deals 20% increased damage and increases the duration of Rip (our main combo point DoT spender) by 1 second per combo point spent.
  2. Wild Charge – This talent gives us a versatile mobility tool, letting us leap forwards, backwards, to allies, or enemies based on our shapeshift form.
  3. Balance Affinity – This talent has our Feral Druid embrace the Balance druid specialization as well, giving us some extra offensive prowess. While we gain Moonkin form and some Balance druid skills, we don’t really use them. We mainly take this talent for the passive bonus of increasing the range of all of our abilities by 5 yards, making it much easier for us to maintain uptime on enemies. We also do gain Typhoon, which allows us to knock back and slow enemies.
  4. Mighty Bash – This talent gives us a strong single target stun that lasts for 4 seconds and is usable in all shapeshift forms.
  5. Soul of the Forest – This talent makes it so that our finishing moves (aka the moves that spend combo points) grant 5 energy per combo point spent and deal 5% increased damage. This helps our combo point spenders deal more damage and give us better energy sustain!
  6. Brutal Slash – This talent turns our Swipe, which is an AoE damage skill that builds combo points, into Brutal Slash. While Brutal Slash is still a solid AoE skill like Swipe, unlike Swipe it is also amazing for single target! If you don’t want the single target damage increase here and want to further increase the potency of your AoE, you can feel free to take Primal Wrath (combo point spender that applies Rip to all enemies within 8 yards).
  7. Moment of Clarity – This talent helps a TON with energy management on Feral Druid. This gives us 30 more maximum energy, Omen of Clarity occurs 50% more often, can accumulate up to 2 charges, and it increases the damage of our next Shred, Thrash or Brutal Slash by 15%. Omen of Clarity has a chance to proc on auto attacks, making the skills I just listed have their next cast free. Moment of Clarity gives us more energy to work with, more frequent free skill casts, and those free casts now increase the damage of our skills; just an amazing quality-of-life talent!
  8. Thorns – This PvP talent gives you an active ability that makes it so that melee opponents who attack you will have nature damage reflected back at them for 12 seconds. Attackers will also have their movement speed reduced by 50% for 4 seconds.
  9. Leader of the Pack – This talent makes it so that while we are in Cat Form, we increase the melee and ranged critical chance of all raid members within 40 yards by 5%. In addition, allies with this buff heal themselves for 4% of their maximum health when they critically hit with a melee or ranged attack, but this cant occur more than once every 6 seconds.
  10. Ferocious Wound – This talent makes it so that attacking with a 5 combo point ferocious bite reduces the target’s maximum health by 5% for 30 seconds, stacking up to 3 times. Only one target can have ferocious wound active at a time.

Rotation

Dealing Damage

With the build we have in this video, the rotation for feral is actually pretty straightforward! With that being said, one thing to keep in mind with ferals is a mechanic called snapshotting. The way this works is that your Bleeds will deal damage based on your stats when the bleeds were applied for their full duration; the damage doesnt update with your stats.

So in terms of the rotation: you want to start in stealth and open with a rake to apply its bleed and stun your enemy. You then want to use Thrash to get its bleed up. Afterwards, start using Brutal Slash to build combo points. When you’re out of Brutal Slash charges, swap to Shred instead. When you hit 5 combo points, use Rip so that you will at this point have all 3 of your bleeds up. Afterwards, just keep using Shred and Brutal Slash to build combo points, spending them on Ferocious bite. Reapply your Rake and Thrash as necessary to maintain their bleeds. The only time you need to reapply Rip is when its duration is at less that 7 seconds. Otherwise, you’ll be able to maintain its duration with Ferocious bite thanks to Sabertooth. In an AoE situation, you will automatically be applying thrash to all targets beacause it’s an AoE, but you’ll also want to apply Rake on as many targets as possible; Rip will go on your primary target in these situations.

Offense

  • When you want to deal big damage, use Tiger’s Fury and Berserk to increase your damage and grant extra combo points on finishing moves! Tiger’s Fury should also be used on cooldown to help generate extra energy and increase your damage. Make sure when you use it that you wont overcap on energy though!
  • Typhoon can be used to push back and slow enemies! Really helpful to move dungeon and raid enemies into more favorable positions for your group.
  • Use Mighty Bash or Maim to stun problematic enemies, taking them out of the fight for a short time!
  • Use Skull Bash to interrupt important enemy spell casts!
  • When you spend combo points, you have a 20% chance per combo point spent to make your next Regrowth or Entangling Roots instant cast and usable in any form! Use whichever skill the situation calls for!

Defense

  • If you are going to take a big hit or are taking a little too much damage, use Barkskin – this low cooldown ability reduces damage taken by 20% for 12 seconds!
  • If you are taking a lot of extra damage, use Survival Instincts. This skill reduces damage taken by 50% for 6 seconds.
  • Utilize Bear form if youre taking a lot of damage and need to make yourself tankier. You can utilize mangle to generate rage to cast on Ironfur to give you extra armor! Keep in mind you don’t deal much damage in this form.
  • Use Soothe to remove an enrage effect from an enemy!

  • Wild Charge can be used in a variety of ways based on what the situation calls for! Use it in caster form to leap back to an ally, cat form to get behind an enemy, bear form to charge to and root an enemy, moonkin form to leap backwards to travel form to leap forwards!

Guardian

Talents

  1. Brambles – This talent gives us a few passive bonuses. It makes it so that we absorb and reflect a portion of damage from each attack. In addition, while Barkskin is active (a short-cooldown damage mitigation ability), the brambles deal extra damage to all nearby enemies every second. We primarily take this ability for the damage it deals, as it deals the most damage of any talent on this tier. This is important for Guardian druid since, in general, the spec has low damage, so this helps us better maintain threat on enemies!
  2. Wild Charge – This talent gives us a versatile mobility tool, letting us leap forwards, backwards, to allies, or enemies based on our shapeshift form.
  3. Restoration Affinity – This talent has our Guardian Druid embrace the Restoration druid specialization as well, giving us some extra healing potential. This gives us a passive that heals us for 3% of our maximum HP every 5 seconds. If we are at full health, an injured party member is healed by this passive instead. In addition, this gives us access to 3 strong heals that we can use when in caster form, and it gives us a CC that can be used in all forms called Ursol’s Vortex. This spell slows enemy movement speed, and the first time they try and move away from the vortex, it pulls them back in!
  4. Mighty Bash – This talent gives us a strong single target stun that lasts for 4 seconds and is usable in all shapeshift forms.
  5. Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc – This talent turns our Berserk into a much, much stronger version of itself. It reduces the cooldown of Mangle, Thrash, Growl and Frenzied Regeneration by 75%, and reduces the cost of Ironfur by 50%. I’m going to explain all of these skills in the rotation section, but those are basically all of our important skills! In addition, Incarnation increases our maximum HP by 30%, and makes mangle hit up to 3 targets. Incarnation is a very strong defensive cooldown, and makes you almost immortal while its up.
  6. Earthwarden – This talent makes it so that when you deal direct damage with Thrash, you gain a charge of this skill, reducing the damage of the next auto attack that you would take by 30%. This can have up to 3 charges.
  7. Rend and Tear – This talent makes it so that each stack of Thrash reduces the target’s damage to us by 2%, and increases our damage to those opponents by 2%!
  8. Den Mother – A PvP talent that gives all allies within 15 yards of us 15% additional HP!
  9. Demoralizing Roar – This active talent makes it so that when we use it, all enemies within 10 yards deal 20% reduced damage for 8 seconds!
  10. Toughness – This talent reduces the duration of all stuns on us by 25%, making us much more difficult to lock down!

Rotation

How to Play Guardian

Guardian Druid is one of my favorite tank specs. The spec is relatively straightforward to play and incredibly tanky, although a bit weak to magical damage. While playing as Guardian, your goal will be to maintain Moonfire on targets that you are fighting, and use Mangle (a single target damage ability) to generate rage. You’ll also use Thrash (which is an AoE bleed that can stack up to 3 times) to deal damage to enemies and interact with our talents, since we have a lot of talents that are based on this skill. You’ll then simply spend the rage generated on Ironfur to increase your armor and make you even tankier. This effect can stack too, and the more stacks of ironfur you have the higher your armor is and the tankier you are! If you’re losing health and need to heal, you’ll spend rage on Frenzied Regeneration. If you’re not taking much damage nor do you need to heal yourself, you can spend rage on Maul to deal some extra damage! If your mangle and thrash are on cooldown, you have no rage to spend, and moonfire is up, fill up globals with swipe. You also want to make sure to use Mangle whenever you get a Gore proc, as that mangle will generate extra rage!

Offensive Notes

  • Use Mighty Bash to stun problematic enemies, taking them out of the fight for a short time!
  • Use Skull Bash to interrupt important enemy spell casts!
  • Use Ursol’s Vortex to slow enemies enemy movement speed and make it so that the first time they try and move away from the vortex, they are pulled back in to the center!
  • Use Incapacitating Roar to CC groups of enemies around you, incapacitating them for a short time! Keep in mind this does break on damage.
  • Use Entangling Roots to root problematic enemies in their place! Keep in mind this is not usable while in bear form.

Defensive Notes

  • If you are going to take a big hit or are taking a little too much damage, use Barkskin – this low cooldown ability reduces damage taken by 20% for 12 seconds and strengthens your Brambles talent!
  • If you are taking a lot of extra damage, use Survival Instincts. This skill reduces damage taken by 50% for 6 seconds. Thankfully, you have 2 charges of this skill too!
  • If you need to just become an immortal juggernaut in situations where you need a LOT of extra healing and mitigation, use your Incarnation. During this time, all of your primary skills mentioned in the rotation section have reduced cost and cooldown, on top of causing you to gain 30% extra health and making mangle hit for AoE damage. You’ll be able to deal a lot of damage, heal for a ton with frenzied regeneration, and stack up your ironfur really high.
You can also deal damage while in cat form with shred, rip and ferocious bite!
  • If your allies need some extra healing and youre not actively tanking (like in a raid), feel free to pop out of bear form and use Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth to heal your allies!
  • Dash is really good to move around the battlefield quickly. Keep in mind this puts you into cat form where you are not as tanky.

Restoration

Click here to view the talent calculator.

Talents

  1. Abundance – This talent makes it so that for each Rejuvenation we have active (one of our primary HoTs), Regrowth (another one of our primary heals) has its cost reduced by 6% and critical chance increased by 6%!
  2. Tiger Dash – This talent gives us an incredibly powerful movement speed skill, having us shift into cat form and moving at 200% movement speed, reducing gradually over 5 seconds.
  3. Balance Affinity – This talent has our Restoration Druid embrace the Balance druid specialization as well, giving us some extra offensive prowess. While we gain Moonkin form and some Balance druid skills, we don’t really use them. We mainly take this talent for the passive bonus of increasing the range of all of our abilities by 5 yards, making it much easier for us to maintain uptime on enemies and allies. We also do gain Typhoon, which allows us to knock back and slow enemies.
  4. Mass Entanglement – This talent gives us a strong AoE root tool, allowing us to root all enemies within 15 yards of our target for 30 seconds. Keep in mind though that damage may break this effect.
  5. Incarnation: Tree of Life – This talent gives us an incredibly strong emergency cooldown, having us transform in the Tree of Life for 30 seconds which increases our healing done by 15%, gives us 120% increased armor, and preventing us from being polymorphed. In addition, Rejuvenation, Wild Growth, Regrowth and Entangling Roots are all enhanced (basically all of our main heals and our single-target root ability).
  6. Spring Blossoms- This talent makes our Efflorescence, an AoE HoT, grant a second HoT for 6 seconds, increasing the throughput of this skill!
  7. Photosynthesis – This talent makes it so that while we have Lifebloom (one of our primary HoTs), on ourselves, our HoTs heal 20% faster. While this skill is on an ally, our HoTs have a 4% chance to cause this skill to bloom, which causes a strong instant heal!
  8. Thorns – This PvP talent gives you an active ability that makes it so that melee opponents who attack you will have nature damage reflected back at them for 12 seconds. Attackers will also have their movement speed reduced by 50% for 4 seconds.
  9. Focused Growth – This talent reduces the cost of Lifebloom by 8%, and our Lifebloom now applies focused growth to the target, which increases Lifebloom’s healing by 8%, stacking up to 3 times.
  10. Reactive Resin – This talent makes it so that casting Rejuvenation grants the target 2 charges of Reactive Resin, which heals the target after they receive a melee critical strike and increases the duration of Rejuvenation by an additional 3 seconds!

Rotation

How to Play Restoration

When playing Restoration druid, you want to maintain HoTs on your allies to make sure that as they’re taking damage, your heals will be healing them back up. Since Lifebloom can only be active on one target at a time, you are going to want to put this on your tank (which will also cause them to gain benefit from the Photosynthesis talent). You also want to maintain an Efflorescence AoE heal at all times. Typically, you’ll place this in melee range so melee will get the heal in addition to your tank. As people start taking damage, you want to place Rejuvenations on them to give them some healing over time. If multiple members start taking damage, cast wild growth to make sure that everyone is being healed from this, as this HoT heals up to 6 allies within 30 yards. If someone needs instant spot healing, use Swiftmend to consume a HoT to give them a big heal, and then reapply the HoT when they start taking damage again. Use Regrowth as an emergency heal when swiftmend is on cooldown and whenever you get a clearcasting proc. Clearcasting has a chance to happen when Lifebloom heals, which makes your next Regrowth free. If you don’t need to heal anyone, you can use Wrath to fill globals and deal some extra damage.

Offensive Notes

  • If you need to pump out a major amount of healing, you’re going to want to pop Incarnation to greatly increase your healing throughput!
  • Use Mass Entanglement or Entangling Roots to root problematic enemies in their place!
  • Typhoon can be used to push back and slow enemies! Really helpful to move dungeon and raid enemies into more favorable positions for your group.

Defensive Notes

  • If your entire raid needs emergency healing, use Tranquility to help heal everyone back to full!
  • If someone is taking a heavy amount of damage, use Ironbark on them to reduce their damage taken by 20% and increase their healing from HoTs received by 20% for 12 seconds.
  • Use Nature’s Swiftness if you need to cast a big regrowth for free in a pinch. This can also be useful to cast Rebirth (a battle Resurrection) instantly if you need someone revived quickly. This can be used on Entangling roots as well, but I think it’s better served on one of the other skills.
  • Tiger Dash is really good to move around the battlefield quickly. Keep in mind this puts you into cat form where you cant use your heals.
  • Use Innervate on yourself or another friendly healer to allow them to be able to cast their skills with no mana cost for a period of time!
  • Use Nature’s Cure to cleanse an ally of all magic, curse and poison effects!
  • Use Soothe to remove an enrage effect from an enemy!
  • Cyclone is a really powerful CC that can remove a problematic enemy from a fight for 6 seconds! During this time, they cant deal or receive any damage or healing!
  • Use Barkskin if you start taking a lot of damage to reduce the damage you take by 20% for 12 seconds.
  • Hibernate can be used to put beast or dragonkin type enemies to sleep for a long period of time! Keep in mind that this CC will break on damage.
  • Utilize Bear form if youre taking a lot of damage and need to make yourself tankier while your HoTs heal you. You can utilize mangle to generate rage to cast on Ironfur to give you extra armor! Keep in mind you cant use your heals in this form.
  • You have access to stealth while you are in cat form. This can be useful to bypass enemies you don’t want to engage with! You can also deal damage while in cat form with shred and ferocious bite!
  • While questing, you can use Moonkin form to use skills like Starfire, Starsurge, Sunfire and Moonfire to deal damage to your enemies! You still have access to Regrowth as a heal while in this form.
  • Stampeding Roar is a powerful tool to give your party a big movement speed boost, having them move 60% faster for 8 seconds!
