Introduction

Welcome to DottzGaming.com’s Nightblade Tank Build, The Shadow, for the Elder Scrolls Online! This build is intended for general PvE, vDungeons and nTrials.

This build is aimed at players who primarily run Veteran Dungeons. It has not be tested in trials but it should fill the role of an off-tank just fine with the setups provided. We’ll be using sets that are often overlooked when it comes to tanking to make for a really fun and active tanking experience. Provided will be both a easy to access gear setup and a more traditional tanking setup depending on how you want to play.

Gear Alternatives

  • Monster Sets
    • Swarm Mother: One of the better sets for non-dragonknight tanks due to the lack of chains for crowd control. For trash pulls or bosses with a lot of add spawns this is my preferred choice.
    • 1 Chokethorn / 1 Shadowrend: This is the most commonly used monster set combination on tanks over the recent patches. Provides a substantial amount of magicka recovery.
    • Scourge Harvester: Insanely low proc-chance but insane self healing when it does eventually proc.
    • Bloodspawn: Back to basics, although most people have switched to Chokethorn / Shadowrend this is still a prominent tanking set. Ultimate regen and tankiness, you can’t really go wrong.
  • Gear Sets
    • Alkosh: Torug’s Pact can be replaced with Alkosh if you have it available. With a high enough uptime on the 5-piece Alkosh will outperform Torug’s. Personally I prefer Torug’s because it’s easier to access (craftable) and use.
    • Spell Power Cure: If SPC is not being provided by your healer(s) in your group it becomes a superb choice on a Nightblade Tank. Because of Refreshing Path, Swallow Soul and Energy Orb* you’ll be providing a high uptime on it for your allies.

Attributes

Your attribute allocation is going to be influenced by your race choice, champion rank, gear, enchants, mundus etc.

The max resource numbers you should aim for are as follows:

Health: 35,000 ( w/ food buff ) for both normal and veteran trials. You can survive with less (30,000) if you’re not aiming for that type of content.

Magicka: 20,000+

Stamina: 20,000+

It is important to have a higher Stamina Pool than Magicka so that Templars’ Spears restore your Stamina rather than Magicka. Spears and Orbs etc restore the resource you have the highest max pool of so keep that in mind when distributing your attributes.

Front Bar – 1h/Shield

Pierce Armor: Your main taunt, debuffs the target with Major Fracture and Major Breach reducing their resistances.

Swallow Soul: Super cheap self heal that also provides 8% increased healing to yourself from all sources.

Refreshing Path: This is the primary enabler to proc the Shadow Barrier passive providing both Major Ward and Major Resolve increasing resistances. Keep this up at all times if possible.

Sap Essence / Flex Spot: The original Nightblade Tank skill. I keep this here out of nostalgia and love for the sap tank. Main source of damage and healing during trash pulls. Also provides Major Sorcery and Brutality. It’s a huge drain on your Magicka so use it wisely.

Absorb Magic: This is primarily slotted for the 8% reduced block cost and damage mitigation but can be used in projectile heavy fights.

Soul Harvest / Shield Discipline: Soul Harvest is used during trash pulls or in boss fights that spawn adds throughout the fight otherwise you should slot Shield Discipline as Soul Harvest is mostly a wasted slot.

Back Bar – Sword and Shield

Mirage: Grants Major Evasion and Minor Resolve and Ward. Has an insanely long duration, make sure to recast when it runs out.

Heroic Slash: Debuffs the enemy with minor maim reducing their damage by 15% and increases your own ultimate gain.

Inner Rage: Ranged Magicka Taunt, slotted for obvious reasons but also pairs really well with Swarm Mothers. Inner Rage into block and Swarm Mothers becomes welfare dragonknight chains against ranged adds.

Leeching Strikes: Your main source of stamina recovery. Cast before the fight starts and recast when it runs out.

Absorb Magic / Flex Spot: This is primarily slotted for the 8% reduced block cost and damage mitigation but can be used in projectile heavy fights.

Aggressive Warhorn: Your primary ultimate, provides your group 10% more max resources and Major Force. Your damage dealers love it and tanks don’t leave home without it.

FLEX

The following are skills you can slot if and when you need them.

Efficient Purge: Remove negative effects from allies. Very valuable skill in some situations, slot if and when needed.

Energy Orb: Casts an orb that can be synergized to restore resources. Very nice support skill for your damage dealers and if you’re running Spell Power Cure it will contribute to a high uptime along with refreshing path and swallow soul.

Absorb Magic: Can be slotted on both bars so you don’t lose the buff when you weapon swap. If you don’t feel like you need to slot anything else run this on both bars rather than just the front bar.

Volcanic Rune: This is effectively welfare choking talons. Not worth slotting in my opinion but for extreme trash pulls it fills the choking talons void.

Spell Symmetry: Struggling with your Magicka pool? If this skill doesn’t fix your issues, nothing will. Slot this if you’re having trouble with sustain. Be aware that when it is used all of your healing is cut by 50% for 4 seconds.

Vampire vs. Mortal

Being a Vampire provides a free 10% Magicka and Stamina Recovery through the Supernatural Recovery passive. The downside being up to 25% extra flame damage taken. The answer is YES, be a vampire. The upsides are invaluable and the downsides are absolutely laughable.
